Churches in Portaria, Pelion Greece

Portaria Pelion Greece

Scattered throughout the entire region of Mount Pelion, there are many beautiful churches and monasteries that are very interesting and well worth visiting.

Though the most famous church in Pelion is the church of "Agia Marina" in the village of Kissos, there are several churches and small monasteries in Portaria which are as equally important.

Probably the most significant to Portaria is the chapel of "Panagias tis Portereas", which in fact is where the village takes it's name from.

Inside this quaint chapel you can see many beautifully painted icons and frescoes that adorn the walls and interior of the chapel.

Right next door is the church of Agios Nikolaos, a three-basilca church that was built in 1856.

The Byzantine monastery of Agios Ioannis Prothromos, which is on the road to the neighbouring village of Makrinitsa, is home to a glorious selection of Byzantine icons and decorations.
